“It’s great working with patients who come to Ascot because they’re interested in their health – they really want to get better and look after themselves. Prevention is an important branch of cardiology. It means that more energy and time is going into preventing or delaying heart disease, rather than just giving people the phone number of the ambulance. I like the optimism of preventative cardiology.”
Dr Selwyn Wong
MB ChB 1989 Otago; FRACP 1998
Dr Selwyn Wong did his initial medical study at Otago University. Cardiology training at Greenlane Hospital in Auckland led to a research fellowship in Seattle, where he worked and studied for two years. Over the past decade, Dr Wong has been involved with research into hyperlipidaemia and diabetes treatment following myocardial infarction. He has published multiple articles and authored two book chapters on echocardiography.
In addition to general cardiology consulting at Ascot, Dr Wong works as a cardiologist at Middlemore Hospital. He is also a director of Echocardiography at Middlemore and a committee member for the Cardiac Society Australia and New Zealand.
A family man, who’s a keen runner and sports follower, Dr Wong was attracted to cardiology for its similarities with mechanical engineering. He also enjoys the variety that comes with the job – no two days are the same.
