“It’s great working with patients who come to Ascot because they’re interested in their health – they really want to get better and look after themselves. Prevention is an important branch of cardiology. It means that more energy and time is going into preventing or delaying heart disease, rather than just giving people the phone number of the ambulance. I like the optimism of preventative cardiology.”

Dr Selwyn Wong did his medical degree at Otago University and cardiology training at Greenlane Hospital in Auckland.  He then completed a research fellowship in Seattle before returning to Auckland to take up a consultant cardiology position at Middlemore Hospital in 2001. He has extensive experience in clinical cardiology particularly coronary artery disease, heart failure and valvular heart disease.

His subspecialty interest is in cardiac imaging. He was the Head of Department of Cardiology at Middlemore for eight years until late 2022. He has been the Chair of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians NZ Training Committee. Selwyn is a Fellow of the Cardiac Societies of Australia/NZ, Europe and the USA and is a Board member of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ).  Of particular note, he is privileged to be currently serving a two-year term as the Chair of the NZ Branch of CSANZ.

A family man, who’s a keen runner and sports follower, Dr Wong was attracted to cardiology for its similarities with mechanical engineering. He also enjoys the variety that comes with the job especially the interaction with patients and colleagues and the relationships formed.

Selwyn practices at Ascot Hospital, Greenlane and runs a Satellite Clinic at East Care Accident & Medical, 260 Botany Rd, Howick.
